Local 1826 to host Fill the Boot in Lehigh, throughout Lee County
March 15, 2017

Southwest Florida Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Local 1826 will host its Fill the Boot fundraiser from March 17-19.

The annual effort raises funds to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases that affect families in Southwest?Florida.

Members will be spread across the county with boots in hand from 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.

IAFF Local 1826 is looking to raise $200,000 this weekend. Last year, it had a record breaking year - raising over $174,000 for local families, making it No. 1 in the state and No. 9 in the country.

"For more than sixty years, firefighters have stood on the front lines with MDA in the fight to free individuals, and the families who love them, from the harm of these life-threatening muscle diseases," MDA Executive Director Erin Randall said. "Each year, Local 1826 firefighters dedicate countless hours of their time participating in Fill the Boot drives and at MDA Summer Camp.

"We're grateful for their steadfast drive and uncommon caring toward the kids and adults we serve and look forward to working together once again to make this Fill the Boot season a huge success," Randall added.

Funds raised through the Fill the Boot events empower families with resources and support that open new possibilities and maximize independence.

In addition, firefighter contributions help support MDA's efforts to raise awareness and provide professional and public education about neuromuscular diseases.

Contributions help MDA's efforts to fund research and programs such as support groups and care centers. They also help send more than 30 local children to the MDA summer camp for free.
