Summer Reading Program continues until August at libraries

Check out the Lee County Library System for a summer of fun-filled reading and exciting activities for children and teens.

Summer programs planned at the libraries include storytime, puppet, magic and juggling shows, as well as crafts and games.

In addition, there are fun challenges for the children and teens to help them stay mentally active while having fun.

There are age-appropriate programs for infants to adults.

The summer reading program is designed to help foster literacy skills and develop a love of reading.

All events are free, but tickets or advanced registration is required, depending on location.

Children's programs

- Leggo My Magic Show

11 a.m. July 11

Joey, Alexandra and Sydney (the live Eclectus parrot) will lead you on an adventure featuring comedy, magic, music and audience interaction. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. For grades K-5. Please pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

- Our Big Backyard

11 a.m. July 18

Manatees, shells, palm trees there's a lot of cool stuff right in our backyard. Join WGCU and PBS KIDS to learn about some of the things that make our home special. You can have an adventure right here at home. For grades K-5. Please pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

- Build a Better World at the Library

11 a.m. July 25

Have fun playing games, doing science experiments, creating art and more. For grades K-5. Please pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

Teen programs

- Build a Better Robot

2 p.m. July 12

Test out several kinds of robots. We will have Spheros and Ozobots as well as iPads that feature the Lightbot app. For grades 5-12. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. For grades 6-12. Maximum 25 attendees.

- Build a Better Pokemon

2 p.m. July 19

A variety of Pokemon-themed crafts will be available, including kaleidocycles, never-ending Pokemon evolution cards, Shrinkydinks, a button maker and corner bookmarks. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. For grades 6-12. Maximum 30 attendees.

- Build a Better Game: Angry Birds

2 p.m. July 26

Play an "in real life" version of the popular video game "Angry Birds." Make your own angry bird pompom game to take home, too. Sponsored by Friends of the East County Regional Library. For grades 6-12. Maximum 30 attendees.

- Drumming with Ndakhte

3 p.m. July 13

Discover the history and sounds of African drums and participate in hands-on drumming activities. For grades K-5. Pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

- Save the Beach

3 p.m. July 20

Join our friends from the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge to discover how you can save our beaches and oceans with hands-on activities. For grades K-5. Pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

- "Budding" Builders' Project

3 p.m. July 27

Make and take craft. For grades K-5. Pick up free tickets at the library one week before the event.

Teen programs

- Teen YoPlay Yoga

2 p.m. July 15

Breathe and stretch as you learn poses, postures and fun yoga techniques. Presented by Emily Gibson of YoPlay Yoga. For grades 6-12.

- Washi Tape Madness

2 p.m. July 22

Discover how to create colorful works of art with washi tape, a fun new craft supply. All materials provided. For grades 6-12.

- Florida's Amazing Birds

2 p.m. July 29

Discover where our local birds fly, what they eat and what their tweets mean. Presented by Jason Boeckman of Lee County Conservation 20/20. For grades 6-12.
