Fire commissioner Smith hospitalized
July 12, 2017

During the budget workshop for the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District on July 11, there was one notable absence.

Fire Commissioner Matt Smith, Seat 5, was at Gulf Coast Hospital in Fort Myers following a bilateral stroke earlier this week.

Fire Chief Robert Dilallo made the announcement at the beginning the meeting, asking that everyone note Smith in their prayers and thoughts.

As of July 11, it was unknown whether Smith would be able to return to his duties on the fire board. Dilallo said at present, it does not appear that is likely.

Smith's family has not released any other information beyond that.

Smith had been a fire commissioner since November 2014, following a more than 30-year career in the U.S. government.
