A road cleanup event cancelled due to Hurricane Irma will now be held Saturday morning.

The Community Watch Coordinators and Pay-it-Forward Lehigh, along with other organizations, will host the Neighborhood Cleanup in Lehigh from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The effort will start at Lehigh Acres Christian Church at 50 Bell Blvd. N.

Since getting a good result from their first cleanup, Steve McGiffin, of the Community Watch Coordinators, was happy to finally get out there to do it again.

"What we are trying to do is get out in the Lehigh community and clean up certain sections and get the people in the community more involved in taking pride in their neighborhoods and keeping a cleaner community," McGiffin said.

Twenty-two individuals took part in the last effort, and he is hoping additional participants will turn out this go-around.

"Normally, we get the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and organizations like that involved to clean up with us," McGiffin said.

Hurricane Irma delayed the event not only because of the destruction of the storm, but because of the county's response to Irma.

"The problem's been is that, with the hurricane, the county hasn't been mowing the lawns so they came along recently with their tractors," McGiffin said. "Now a lot of debris should be showing up."

To find areas, members scout out the community to prioritize locations.

"We go to different sections all over, different neighborhoods," McGiffin said. "We look for people that are cleaning with us to find out different areas and then we scout them out and see if they're a potential area that needs to be clean."

McGiffin got involved because of his belief in the Lehigh community and he wants to continue to try and keep Lehigh beautiful.

"I think it is disgusting the amount of litter that is on the roadways in Lehigh," McGiffin said. "I like the Lehigh community. There is so many nice people here and we are trying to get people to take pride within the Lehigh community.
