The Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce is partnering with Florida Community Bank for a community wide Shredder Day to be held on Friday, May 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Businesses and residents are encouraged to clean out their closets and file cabinets and bring unwanted boxes and bags of papers to shred.

According to board member and special events coordinator Susan Kostyk, this is the second year that the bank has sponsored the event with the chamber.

"This the perfect time to host a day for shredding being that it's ending tax season. After the documents are shredded, people will get a certificate to verify that it was done," said Kostyk.

The IRS suggest keeping necessary tax documents for at least seven years, then they can be discarded. Due to identity theft, documents that have Social Security numbers, birth dates, or account numbers should never be thrown in the trash.

"This event for anyone who does not own a shredder and would normally have to pay someone to do it. This is just $5 per drop, which is very affordable," Kostyk said.

The event will be held in the FCB parking lot at 1261 Homestead Road North (across from Publix) with easy access to drop off papers for both individuals and businesses. The cost is $5.00 per box/bag and includes a certificate of destruction.

"It's the perfect location, because it's in the center of town," said Kostyk.

There will also be a drive-thru set up to make it easy to recycle for those in a hurry.

During the event there will also be information available on ID theft, fraud protection and more.

This Shredder Day will also include a drop off for expired medications, so residents should check through their medicine cabinets and dispose of all expired medications safely.

"You don't want to throw them down the toilet or into the sink because it gets into the water system and can pollute the environment," said Kostyk.

Residents can bring a variety of documents including those with Social Security numbers, birth dates, banking information and utility bills.

"People should not bring newspapers, scrap paper, or anything that could otherwise go into a recycling bin," said Kostyk.

Attendees will also be able to grab a delicious bit to eat during their lunch break from Currie's Smoking Pot BBQ truck, which will be set up and serving great food from 11 a.m. 1 p.m.

Vendor spaces are available for $10.00, which include a 10 x 10 space, (must bring own table, chairs, tent)

Sponsorships for the event are $50 and include a 10 x 10 vendor space, signage the day of the event, plus web and social media PR outreach.

"This is a great place for businesses to reach out to the community in various ways and promote their businesses/services for a couple hours," said Kostyk.
