Golfers, residents and a few local high school students came out to celebrate the end of one of Lehigh Acre's oldest and most prestigious golf courses. On April 21 the Kiwanis Orange Ball Classic marked the final tournament to be held on the greens of Mirror Lakes Golf Course.

The tournament was played to benefit the Dean McNew Scholarship, with proceeds from the tournament going towards the college scholarship program. Every year a local, high school senior is awarded the scholarship to be used towards college.

"We had a great turnout this year and awarded a lot of prizes to those took part in the event. Each player was also given a commemorative coin to serve as a reminder of their part in history," said Dawn McNew, tournament director and scholarship committee member.

The Dean McNew scholarship was started in memory of Dawn McNew's husband who was a longtime coach at Lehigh Senior High School.

The scholarship will be awarded to an athlete who is a senior at one of the local high schools.

According to McNew, this marks their sixth recipient so far. The student will receive an $8,000 scholarship, which is dispersed over four years to help defray educational costs. The students must remain in good academic standing throughout the program to continue to receive the scholarship.

Other activities during the day included a chance to win a $10,000 cash for a hole-in-one, $2,500 cash prize putting contest, a set of Callaway Golf Clubs, two domestic airline tickets and week-long vacations. Participants also participated in raffles throughout the day.

Following the tournament participants enjoyed an Olive Garden sponsored luncheon.

"Texas Roadhouse was here as well to give out barbeque sliders, prizes and various held contests throughout the day,' said McNew.

Mirror Lakes originally opened in 1958 as part of the Admiral Lehigh Resort and later changed names when re-founded in 1970. The golf course has hosted celebrity events, as well as PGA, State and junior tournaments.
