To the editor:

As Veterans Day, Nov. 11, draws near, it is time to reflect upon the sacrifices made by those special men and women who wrote that blank check to the United States of America, up to and including their lives for the freedoms we as Americans enjoy today.

There will be parades and programs on this day to express our appreciation and gratitude for our veterans who gave their no-greater-love sacrifice in the protection of our freedoms. I personally believe this appreciation and gratitude should provided every day for our veterans by every American.

Since 2003 we have been afforded the opportunity of a program honoring our veterans in collaboration with the Lee County School District, Charter Schools, Community Leaders and Veterans. This year's Pride and Patriotism of Lee County, youth celebrating the arts and honoring our veterans, has the theme of "The Role of Women in the Military Through the Years." We are proud to showcase the musical, artistic, poetic and filming/interviewing (in the mini documentaries) of our Lee County students in both the public and charter schools.

We will open this program with an opening letter from Sen. Tammy Duckworth who states, "This Theme is a Special One to me."

Sen. Duckworth was one of the first Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

She was severely wounded, losing both legs, when her helicopter was shot down by an enemy RPG (rocket-propelled grenade).

For families and fellow veterans here in Lee County I invite you all on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, to Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall for the 6 p.m. performance of Pride and Patriotism..

This is more than a program... It is a celebration!
